the young v's
Old Varndeanians Youth may sound like a paradox, but the newly formed Youth Section shares much in common with
the older side of the Club.
The culture of playing attractive football whilst upholding the values of fair play and sportsmanship, yet remaining both
competitive and successful , have been the hallmark of Old Varndeanians Football Club for generations.
The idea of creating a Youth Section began auspiciously enough with a
discussion in The Eclipse Pub in Hove during a lull in an emphatic
England 4-0 victory over Slovakia back on March 28th, 2009. Four days
later and the Old V’s committee had provisionally approved the notion,
and the very next day it was discussed at a Parents’ Meeting after
which matters progressed very quickly. The decision to create a Youth
Section was formally ratified at the Old V’s AGM on May 16th.
Five months after inception, Old V’s now had an U-11 Youth team made
primarily from boys who had two very successful years playing mini
soccer for Hangleton Rangers FC, and on September 6th 2009, Old
Varndeanians Youth U-11 played their first competitive match in the
Sussex Sunday Youth League.
The adoption of the Youth Section by the Old V’s is more than a random
act of generosity as it forms part of a wider strategy of the Club to
forge even stronger links with the University of Brighton and the local
community.
Two new age groups have been added for the 2010/2011 season - U-10 and U14 - to complement what is now the U-12 team.
The Old Varndeanians Club has a great history as one of Brighton’s
oldest and well respected football clubs. It is rightly proud of it’s
success on the pitch and it’s management off it. The future for the
Club is exciting and the Youth Section will play a big part of that
future by helping to produce and develop young talented footballers
with the life skills to match.
